He continues to serve as an inspector for independent schools, an activity in which he has been involved for many years and much enjoys.
With a successful career in education, including twenty years as the Head of two independent schools, Alan brings his experience to bear in advising and helping in the selection of senior appointments in schools. The depth of his educational knowledge combined with years of first hand experience in planning, management and leadership has given him insight into the needs of schools going forward.
In 1986 he was appointed Headmaster of Rishworth School in West Yorkshire, a mixed boarding school covering the whole age range. After six successful years he moved to be the Headmaster of Plymouth College, an HMC day and boarding school with responsibility for over 900 boys in the Prep and Senior Schools.
Under his inspirational leadership he successfully transitioned the school into coeducation, led it through two inspections and merged it with a neighbouring girls’ school.
He has recruited extensively for his own schools at all levels and experienced different processes and challenges in finding and keeping the best people to take major management roles in highly competitive environments.
